Scope and Content Herriot Hill Stationery & Printing Works, Nos 118-78 Cathedral Street, Taylor Street and No 135 St James' Road, Glasgow This large printing works was founded in about 1861 by William Collins & Co, printers and publishers. It grew piecemeal over a long period to cover three blocks, incorporating the Villafield Press of the rival Blackies from 1931. This shows part of the St James' Road frontage of the works. The building in the centre was built in 1878, and the large modern warehouse to the left was added in the 1960s. Collins moved to the former Blackies' printing works at Bishopbriggs in the 1970s, and sold much of the Herriot Hill site to the University of Strathclyde, who demolished most of the buildings, converting the 1960s warehouse into a library and offices.
