SC 597933

Description Glasgow, Paton Street, Dennistoun Tram Depot General View

Date 5/5/1967

Collection Papers of Professor John R Hume, economic and industrial historian, Glasgow, Scotland

Catalogue Number SC 597933

Category On-line Digital Images

Scope and Content Dennistoun Tram Depot, Paton Street, Glasgow The depot was built in 1895-6 for Glasgow Corporation Tramways Department to house horse trams, and the horses to pull them. The depot was converted to house electric cars when the system was electrified in 1900-2, and was subsequently enlarged. This shows the Paton Street frontage of the depot, its modest scale concealing what was in fact a large depot. This frontage probably dates from the period after electrification. When Glasgow Corporation took over the operation of the horse tramways from the Glasgow Tramway & Omnibus Co in 1894 it had to provide a complete set of depots for its new horse cars.
