Scope and Content Saucel Mills (now Watermill Hotel), Bladda Lane, Paisley, Renfrewshire This mill was on the site of an ancient mill but was rebuilt in 1868. In that form it was a double mill with two sets of three millstones, each driven by a low-breast waterwheel, and two kilns. It also had a pea girdle for drying peas to make pease meal. This shows the two low-breast waterwheels which drove the two sections of the mill. They were in a chamber between the sections. Note the wooden spokes, an unusual feature in late 19th-century waterwheels. Low-breast waterwheels were arranged so that the water was admitted to the wheel below the level of the axle. Most of them, as here, were fitted with paddles without sides. Source: RCAHMS contribution to SCRAN.
