Scope and Content Vulcan Works, Renfrew Road, Paisley, Renfrewshire This large complex was founded in 1838, and became famous in the ownership of Fullerton, Hodgart & Barclay. The original works was on the west side of Renfrew Road, and a new works was built on the east side in the late 19th century. This shows the main range of the original works, on Hamilton Street. This was part of a compact complex, on a square plan, and was probably built as a foundry, with its roof-ridge ventilator. The two rows of windows lit a single internal space. The original complex was one of the finest and largest early engineering works in the west of Scotland. The works as a whole closed in 1980. The buildings were demolished and the eastern part of the site developed as an industrial estate. Source: RCAHMS contribution to SCRAN.
