Scope and Content Saucel Mills (now Watermill Hotel), Bladda Lane, Paisley, Renfrewshire This mill was on the site of an ancient mill but was rebuilt in 1868. In that form it was a double mill with two sets of three millstones, each driven by a low-breast waterwheel, and two kilns. It also had a pea girdle for drying peas to make pease meal. This shows the mill from the north, with the waterfall, the Hamills, which acted as a weir, on the left. The range to the right was the granary. The crane to the left was in the Saucel Ironworks of Millen Brothers. This mill was still in operation in 1967, in the ownership of James Snodgrass Ltd, making oatmeal and pease meal. It closed in the following year and was sold to the Stakis Group, who converted it into the Watermill Hotel. Source: RCAHMS contribution to SCRAN.
