Scope and Content Warehouses, Nos 175-203 and Nos 105-69 Bell Street, Glasgow These two warehouses were both built for the Glasgow & South Western Railway along the southern edge of its College Goods Station, constructed on the site of the old College (University) of Glasgow. Both warehouses were built for the whisky trade. This shows the earlier warehouse on the right, dating from c.1880. It had arched concrete floors supported by wrought-iron beams and cast iron columns. The larger building on the left was built in 1882-3, and was of similar but heavier construction. These warehouses were built to support the whisky blending trade, which expanded markedly in the 1880s, largely to supply export markets. By the 1960s they were in multiple use. The older one has since been demolished and the newer one converted to flats. Source: RCAHMS contribution to SCRAN.
