Scope and Content Clay Pipe Factory, Nos 26-42 Bain Street, Glasgow This works was founded in 1824 by W White & Son, clay tobacco pipe makers. This works was built between 1867 and 1877, and was the largest of its kind in Scotland. It made pipes for export, as well as for the home market. This view shows the Bain Street frontage of the works, from the north-east. The main ranges housed the hand-moulding shops, and the two-storeyed section was the frontage to the kilns used for firing the pipes. Clay tobacco pipes were used by almost all smokers in the 19th century. Their long stems were very fragile, and so large numbers were needed. This works employed large numbers of women in moulding the pipes, which were made of white clay. Source: RCAHMS contribution to SCRAN.
