Scope and Content Clay Pipe Factory, Nos 26-42 Bain Street, Glasgow This works was founded in 1824 by W White & Son, clay tobacco pipe makers. This works was built between 1867 and 1877, and was the largest of its kind in Scotland. It made pipes for export, as well as for the home market. This view shows the Gibson Street (left) and Bain Street frontages of the works, from the south-east. The main ranges housed the hand-moulding shops, and the two-storeyed section was the frontage to the kilns used for firing the pipes. Clay tobacco pipes were very popular in the 19th century, and were made in vast numbers, as they were fragile. They were made in Glasgow until the 1960s, though this works stopped making them in the 1950s. These buildings survive in multiple use. Source: RCAHMS contribution to SCRAN.
