Scope and Content General view showing linking bridges, from north-west, Seamount Court and Porthill Court, Gallowgate Redevelopment, Aberdeen The Gallowgate II development was built in 1964 by the Housing Committee of Aberdeen Corporation, with W J Anderson as contractor. The site includes one, 19-storeyed slab block containing 126 flats, and one 9-storeyed slab block of 72 flats. This shows Porthill Court on the right, and part of Seamount Court on the left. Linking towers with glass sides join the two slab blocks, with their rock-faced cladding and recessed balconies. Tapering columns known as 'pilotis' at ground-floor level create open areas below each block. Aberdeen began a multi-storey building programme after visits by its Housing Committee to schemes in Roehampton and Glasgow in 1959. Tower block developments like this one were seen as the answer to long waiting lists for housing in many cities in the 1960s and 1970s. This development has been selected as one of Scotland's key 20th-century Modern architectural monuments. Source: RCAHMS contribution to SCRAN.
