Scope and Content Kingston Dock, Glasgow Recommended by Thomas Telford in 1806 as a site for Glasgow's first off-river dock, the construction of Kingston Dock was not completed until 1867. The wooden quay walls and transit sheds destroyed by a fire in 1914 were rebuilt in 1915. This shows the east end of the dock. The electric rail-mounted cranes, by George Russell & Co Ltd of Motherwell, probably dated from the 1915 works. They could lift a load of five tons. To the right are the Kingston Grain Mills of 1875-6. This dock was used by coasting vessels until the early 1960s, but was closed in advance of the construction of the new bridge. The dock has been infilled and the transit sheds and cranes demolished. The site has been partially redeveloped. Source: RCAHMS contribution to SCRAN.
