Scope and Content Kingston Dock swing bridge, Glasgow Kingston Dock was Glasgow's first off-river dock. It was recommended by Thomas Telford in 1806, and the site was reserved, but it was not completed until 1867. The entrance was spanned by a wrought-iron swing bridge. This shows the bridge from the south. It was built by John Yule & Co, Hutchesontown, and was originally hydraulically operated using mains water from the Gorbals Water Works. It was speedily converted to steam power, to reduce operating costs. The steam engine and boiler were suspended below the east end of the bridge. The chimney can be seen near the right-hand side of the bridge in this view. When the bridge was demolished the engine was saved, and is now in the maritime museum at Irvine.
