Scope and Content Kingston Dock, Glasgow Thomas Telford recommended construction of Glasgow's first off-river dock in 1806 when the site was reserved. The dock was not completed until 1867. The wooden quay walls and transit sheds were rebuilt in 1915 after being destroyed by fire in 1914. This shows the stub quay to the west of the dock entrance, which was spanned by a wrought-iron swing bridge, to the right in this view. The electric rail-mounted crane, by George Russell & Co, of Motherwell, probably dates from the 1915 works. This dock was used by coasting vessels until the early 1960s, but was closed in advance of the construction of the new bridge. The dock has been infilled and the transit sheds and cranes demolished. The site has been partially redeveloped. Source: RCAHMS contribution to SCRAN.
