Scope and Content Hydraulic pumping station, Prince's Dock, Mavisbank Road, Glasgow This station was built in 1894 to provide hydraulic power for the cranes installed in Prince's Dock when it was built. This was probably the most extensive installation of mobile hydraulic cranes in Britain, and possibly in the world. This shows the station from Govan Road. The tower in the centre was the base of the chimney of the boiler house to the right. The hydraulic pumps were in the building to the left of the chimney base, and the accumulator was in the tower on the right. Hydraulic power transmission was briefly popular before electrical power took over. Water at high pressure was supplied to the points where power was required. The accumulator stored water under pressure to even out demand. Source: RCAHMS contribution to SCRAN.
