Scope and Content View from south of Crown Street, Aberdeen Crown Street was laid out in 1821, and building began a few years later. It is composed of short sections of two-storeyed terraced houses, with commercial property between. The building material is grey Aberdeen granite. This photograph shows Crown Street from the south. The terraced houses are all built of grey granite, but vary in design. Some have stairs over a basement area, and most have dormer windows and a string-course. Cast-iron railings line the street. Granite, quarried from the famous Rubislaw quarry, gives Aberdeen buildings much of their character. The blocks of pale grey or pink stone can be finely cut, and are used for fine ashlar masonry, and even for paving slabs. Source: RCAHMS contribution to SCRAN.
