Scope and Content Govan Ropeworks, No 272 Helen Street, Glasgow This works was founded in 1890 by the Govan Rope & Sail Co Ltd, and built to designs by W Burns Stewart, architect. It had a two-storeyed frontage block, with ropewalk behind, parallel to Helen Street. This shows the ropewalk, with the preparation and warehouse buildings to the right. Note that the ropewalk has been extended to the south. In the foreground are allotment gardens, probably laid out during World War II. By 1967, the works was owned by the Gourock Ropework Co. It closed in 1967, and was demolished in 1969. When Edmiston Drive was laid out between the wars it crossed the ropewalk on a bridge, which still survives. Source: RCAHMS contribution to SCRAN.
