Scope and Content Kingston Engine Works, No 71 Milnpark Street and No 76 Portman Street, Glasgow This works was founded in about 1866 by Smith Brothers, engineers and iron founders, and extended in World War I for munitions manufacture The firm eventually specialised in the manufacture of shipbuilding machine tools. This shows the original works, built in red and white brick, with round-headed windows, a style characteristic of the 1860s and 1870s. Note the large elliptically-arched doorway, and the use of stone dressings on the corners, and round the doorway, an unusual feature. Since Smith Brothers left the works in the inter-war years, it has been used for a variety of purposes. Since the 1980s it has belonged to News International, and prints the Scottish editions of The Times and The Sun newspapers. Source: RCAHMS contribution to SCRAN.
