Scope and Content Inchinnan Bridge over Black Cart Water, Greenock Road, Renfrew, Renfrewshire This is one of a pair of bridges built over the Black and White Cart Waters in 1812 to designs by Robertson Buchanan, engineer. As they adjoined the Blythswood Estate they were suitably grand in architectural treatment. This shows the bridge from the north-east, showing the unusual use of semi-elliptical arches for the main spans, and the triumphal arch treatment of the flood-relief arches above the piers. There are smaller accommodation arches at each end. This is a unique pairing of bridges, made possible by the confluence of the two rivers before they flow into the River Clyde. The boldness of the architectural treatment, related to the practice of John Rennie, is remarkable. Source: RCAHMS contribution to SCRAN.
