Scope and Content Rolling lift bridge, Carlile Place, Paisley, Renfrewshire This bridge was built by Sir William Arrol & Co Ltd in 1911 as a footbridge across the River Cart navigation. The operating mechanism and part of the steelwork were removed for scrap in about 1942, after navigation above this point had ended. This shows the bridge from the south-west, after it had been modified. The toothed track on which the curved end section (scrapped) rolled to open the bridge can be seen on the left. This bridge was of the Scherzer type, and was one of only two in the west of Scotland. The other one, also over the River Cart navigation, is at Renfrew, and is still intact.
