Scope and Content Caledonia Linoleum Works, Station Road, Kirkcaldy, Fife Floorcloth manufacture was started in Kirkcaldy by Michael Nairn in 1847. The process involved coating coarse canvas with layers of paint. When linoleum was invented at Staines, its manufacture was quickly taken up in Kirkcaldy, which became renowned for the product. This shows part of the Caledonia Works of Barry, Ostlere & Shepherd, looking across the station. The remainder of the works lay to the left. Note the showpiece office, a conspicuous feature of the frontage to the railway. The linoleum industry was badly affected by the fashion for fitted carpets and by the introduction of vinyl floor coverings. Barry, Ostlere & Shepherd's works had closed by 1967, and were demolished soon after. Source: RCAHMS contribution to SCRAN.
