Scope and Content Cupar Gas Works, Front Lebanon, Cupar, Fife Cupar Gas Works was founded in 1839, presumably as a typical burgh works for street, domestic and industrial lighting. It was re-equipped with vertical retorts during the inter-war period in a manner typical of the larger burgh works. This shows the works from the rear, showing some of the features of the horizontal retort works: the square-section chimney, the cast iron scrubber, and the retort house, with round-headed windows. The vertical retort house is behind the tree on the right. The manufacture of coal gas was phased out in the 1960s, when many of the smaller works were supplanted by connection to a gas grid, as was the case with Cupar. This works has since been demolished.
