Scope and Content River frontage of Albert Harbour, Greenock, Inverclyde This harbour was formed in the 1860s, the foundation stone being laid in 1862. It was constructed to expand the harbour capacity of Greenock. The material excavated was used to form an esplanade at the west end of Greenock. This shows the river frontage of the harbour, with warehouses and a former sugar refinery (left) in the background. By the 1960s, the harbour was only used by small craft.
