Date 29/4/1967

Collection Papers of Professor John R Hume, economic and industrial historian, Glasgow, Scotland

Catalogue Number SC 595328

Category On-line Digital Images

Scope and Content Part of City of Glasgow Grain Mill and Stores, Nos 186-260 North Speirs Wharf, Glasgow Constructed for John Currie & Co, grain merchants from c.1851, this impressive range of canal-side buildings were extended at various times, most notably in 1869-70. This shows a five-storeyed block at the north end of the range. It is dated 1851, but that probably refers to the date of foundation of the firm. It is likely that it is the addition of 1869-70. On its left is the Port Dundas Sugar Refinery of 1865-6. The whole range of buildings, including the sugar refinery, was used for many years as a whisky bond. It was vacated in the 1970s, and lay empty for some years before being converted into flats and offices in the late 1980s. Source: RCAHMS contribution to SCRAN.
