Scope and Content Argyll Motor Works, North Main Street, Alexandria, West Dunbartonshire This works was built in 1906 for the Argyll Motor Co Ltd, which had been founded in Glasgow, and was said to be the largest motor car factory in Europe at the time. It was built for show as well as for production. This shows the main frontage of the works, behind which were offices, and behind them a large area of north-lit workshops. In 1967 the works was still used as a torpedo factory, a purpose for which it had been adapted in 1913. The use of the factory for munitions manufacture ended in about 1970, and the building then lay empty for many years. The workshops were demolished in the 1980s, and the site developed for housing. The front block is now a factory outlet centre. Source: RCAHMS contribution to SCRAN.
