Scope and Content Glasgow Sausage Works, No 240 North Woodside Road, Glasgow One of two large sausage factories in Glasgow, this works was founded c.1888 by R D Waddell. It was completely rebuilt in 1895-7 to designs by James Lindsay, architect, and was further extended in 1900. This shows the works from the south-east. The six-storeyed corner block with its water tower was built in 1896-7, the section to the right being slightly earlier. By 1967 only the ground floor was in use, as a car showroom. Glasgow was renowned in the late 19th/early 20th century for its retail food businesses. Waddells had a chain of shops, which totalled 36 in 1901, with branches as far away as Belfast and London. The other leaders, Annackers, had a similar business. Source: RCAHMS contribution to SCRAN.
