Scope and Content Engine of the paddle steamer 'Leven', Dumbarton Castle, West Dunbartonshire This single-cylinder side-lever steam engine was the first marine engine built by Robert Napier, who became the greatest of the early marine engineers. It was built in 1824 to power a steamer plying between Glasgow and Dumbarton. This shows the engine on a plinth, in front of Dumbarton Castle, The paddle-wheel shaft is on the top left of the engine, and the single cylinder is on the right, driving the shaft through the horizontal beam above the plinth. Robert Napier saved this engine when the hull was scrapped, and took it to his works at Lancefield. His sons J R & J Napier presented it to Napier's birthplace in 1877. It is now at the Denny Ship Model Experiment Tank in Dumbarton. Source: RCAHMS contribution to SCRAN.
