Scope and Content Railway viaduct, Carmyle, Glasgow This viaduct was built as part of a Caledonian Railway branch line from Rutherglen to Coatbridge, which opened in 1865. This line served several of the Coatbridge ironworks, as well as collieries and ironstone mines. This shows the viaduct from the south-east, with its flat segmental arches. The use of polished ashlar was unusual for the Caledonian Railway. Note the adaptation of the cutwaters to carry a water main across the River Clyde. This line closed to passengers in 1966, though it remained open for freight. It was reopened for passengers in the 1990s under the auspices of Strathclyde Passenger Transport.
