Scope and Content Dawsholm Gas Works, Skaethorn Road, Glasgow Established in 1871-2 by Glasgow Corporation Gas Department, this gas works was originally equipped with horizontal retorts, standard at that time, but was rebuilt several times, and latterly had vertical retorts. This shows the entrance to the works from Skaethorn Road. The two-storeyed building is the gatehouse. At the end of the road is part of the Kelvin Aqueduct on the Forth and Clyde Canal, which was used to transport coal to the works when it was built. The works had stopped manufacturing coal gas by 1967 and the site was largely cleared in 1968. It was reused in the 1980s but has now completely disappeared. Skaethorn Road has been re-routed, and there are now houses on the site of the works. Source: RCAHMS contribution to SCRAN.
