Scope and Content Maryhill Locks, Forth and Clyde Canal, Maryhill Road, Glasgow Opened in 1790 as part of the programme to complete the Forth and Clyde Canal, this section linking Stockingfield Junction and Bowling consists of a flight of five locks, with intermediate basins. It was designed by Robert Whitworth. This shows the anchor point for the iron strap which held in place the top of one of the gates of one of the locks at Maryhill. The cut surface of the heel-post of the lock gate can be seen above the holding strap. This flight of locks and the aqueduct were the largest and most expensive works on the whole canal. The locks were re-gated in the early 1990s, and the canal was reopened to navigation in 2001 as part of the Millennium Link project. Source: RCAHMS contribution to SCRAN.
