Scope and Content Maryhill Engine Works, No 23 Lochburn Road, Glasgow This works was built c.1873 for Clarkson Bros, engineers and machine makers. This firm, which was by 1901 Clarkson & Beckitt, was enterprising in finding niche markets, such as that for tobacco and oil mill machinery. This shows the building from the south-east. Appearances suggest that the whole building was originally two-storeyed. The site is a restricted one, as the Forth and Clyde Canal is on an embankment to the rear. As Beckitt & Anderson, the firm was renowned for its coal-mine haulage equipment, one of which is preserved at Dunaskin, Ayrshire. In 1967 the works was occupied by Craig & Buchanan, general ironmongers and engineers. Source: RCAHMS contribution to SCRAN.
