Scope and Content Anderston Grain Mill, No 27 Washington Street, Glasgow The oldest part of this mill was a four-storeyed masonry structure built as a cotton store before 1845. This was converted into a grain mill by Harvie & McGavin in 1865 when a five-storeyed red and white brick granary block was added plus a small office. This shows the complex from the north-east. The former cotton store is in the centre, with a 20th-century brick top floor. To the left are the red and white brick arches of the 1865 granary. The mill was still in use in 1967. This mill continued in operation until the 1980s, polishing rice. It had been equipped for this to supply the needs of ships with Lascar crews. After closure the buildings lay empty for many years before a hotel was built incorporating the 1865 block .. Source: RCAHMS contribution to SCRAN.
