Scope and Content Public store, Nos 44-54 James Watt Street, Glasgow This warehouse was built in 1861 for Thomas Mann as grain and general free stores (i.e. it was not a bonded store). It was one of the finest of the city's warehouses, in the grand Classical manner, and may have been designed by Charles Wilson. This shows the building from the south-west, with another Classical warehouse of 1864 to the left. In 1967 the building was in the ownership of William Whitely, an American-owned firm, and used as a bonded store. After a disastrous fire in a bond in Cheapside Street in the early 1960s the storage of whisky in city centre buildings was phased out, and one of the buildings vacated was this one. In the 1990s the building, except the façade, was demolished. Source: RCAHMS contribution to SCRAN.
