Scope and Content Former aqueduct, Blackhall, Paisley (Renfrewshire council area) This large single-span aqueduct over the White Cart Water was designed by Thomas Telford, and built for the Glasgow, Paisley and Ardrossan Canal, on which it was the largest engineering work. It was adapted as a railway bridge in 1885. This view shows the aqueduct from the east, with the chimney of the Seedhill Finishing Company Limited in the background. Note the depth of the arch ring necessary to accommodate the weight of the canal channel. The canal was only completed as far as Johnstone, and suffered badly when the Glasgow, Paisley, Kilmarnock and Ayr Railway opened in 1840. That line bought the canal in the late 1840s, and its successor converted it to a railway. Source: RCAHMS contribution to SCRAN.
