Scope and Content Water supply system, New Lanark, Lanark (South Lanarkshire council area) Piped water was introduced into New Lanark in 1933, with spring water collected and filtered in the basement of the School for Children, then pumped up to a storage tank above the village for gravity distribution. This view shows the filter chamber in the School basement. The filter beds surround the central tank, with the raw water distributed from the cast iron pipes above. Filtered water can be seen pouring from pipes at the base of the filter beds. The private water supply to the village ended soon after this photograph was taken, when the supply tank was connected to the Lanark town water supply. The structures seen here survive, and the chamber is now being used as a boiler-house. Source: RCAHMS contribution to SCRAN.
