Scope and Content Water supply system, New Lanark, Lanark (South Lanarkshire council area) Piped water was introduced into New Lanark in 1933, with spring water collected and filtered in the basement of the School for Children, then pumped up to a storage tank above the village for gravity distribution. This view shows one of two hydraulic pumps, made by Joseph Evans and Sons, Wolverhampton, installed as auxiliaries to a steam pump in 1933. These hydraulic pumps were powered by water from the Ponclair Burn, about 25m above the school. The steam pump was replaced by an electric one in the 1950s. The private water supply to the village ended soon after this photograph was taken, when the supply tank was connected to the Lanark town water supply. The pumps were scrapped.
