Scope and Content Counting House, New Lanark, Lanark (South Lanarkshire council area) This small office was apparently built by Robert Owen on to the end of Caithness Row, two blocks of houses constructed for David Dale in the early 1890s. From the circular first-floor room, lit at two levels, all traffic into the mill area could be viewed This view shows the building during the upgrading of Caithness Row for the New Lanark Association, to designs by Ian G Lindsay and Partners, architects, Edinburgh. Owen completely remodelled the centre of New Lanark to fit his view of what a classically enlightened community should look like. Part of this conception was the monitoring of the activities in the village, which the counting house facilitated. Source: RCAHMS contribution to SCRAN.
