Scope and Content Gatehouse, New Lanark Road, Lanark (South Lanarkshire council area) This is one of a pair of gatehouses controlling access to what was when they were built the private road to New Lanark Mills. The houses face each other, and probably controlled gates across the road. This view shows the north house, which appeared to be in original external condition in 1966. The building is built of local purple sandstone, with white sandstone dressings, as in the main buildings at New Lanark. The design of these gatehouses is similar to that of other buildings built by Robert Owen's partnerships at New Lanark, and they may well have been built as part of Owen's policy of tightening up stock control at the mills.
