Scope and Content Victoria Grain Mills, 159 West Street and Wallace Street, Glasgow (Glasgow City council area) This complex was founded in 1879 by Hamilton and Manson, grain millers, but the buildings existing in 1966 were built between 1888 and 1896 to designs by WF McGibbon, a Glasgow architect who designed a number of other industrial buildings. This view shows the mills from the north west, looking along Wallace Street. The corner section with its castellated water-tower was the last part to be built, in 1896. The tenement on the right was later demolished for the Kingston Bridge approaches. This complex was probably built to mill provender for animal feed, especially for the city's enormous horse population. By 1966 it was a store for a wholesale grocery firm, and it is still, in 2001, a warehouse, in different ownership. Source: RCAHMS contribution to SCRAN.
