Scope and Content St Andrew's Electricity Generating Station, 185-245 Pollokshaws Road, Glasgow (Glasgow City council area) This station was built for Glasgow Corporation Electricity Department to designs by Andrew Myles, architect, to supply electricity to the south side of the city. It had a rail-side site, but had to rely on mains water for cooling, so had cooling towers. This view shows the station from the south west. The range with the small round-headed windows was built as a battery rroom for storing electricity to meet peak demand, possible when Direct Current distribution was used. This station did not survive the transition from Direct Current to Alternating Current distribution, and after closure was converted into a printing works for Glasgow Corporation. The buildings still stand, and are partly used for printing. Source: RCAHMS contribution to SCRAN.
