Scope and Content Worsted spinning mills, Mill Street, Ayr (South Ayrshire council area) This large brick mill was built in 1878 by James Templeton and co to spin worsted yarn for weaving into carpets in their Glasgow factories. It was the only mill of its kind in Ayr. This view shows the mill from the north. It was not a prominent building, being hemmed in by lower sheds. It was built of the local yellowish brick, and did not have any architectural pretensions. With the decline in demand for traditional carpets the mill closed, and it has been demolished.
