Scope and Content Old Bridge of Ayr, (South Ayrshire council area) This four-span masonry arch bridge was built in the late 15th and early 16th century, and was a typical bridge of the period, with massive piers, segmental arches, and triangular cutwaters. It carried the traffic of the town until the 1820s. This view shows the bridge from the north west. It was extensively repaired in 1910, with the introduction of reinforced concrete into the arches. Much of the facing masonry was replaced at that time. The bridge is now used only by pedestrians. The survival of the bridge was due to strongly expressed public opinion in the town, which objected to its demolition when it was in poor condition. Source: RCAHMS contribution to SCRAN.
