Scope and Content Basin, Ayr Harbour, Ayr (South Ayrshire council area) Ayr has been a coal-exporting port since the 18th century, and its harbour facilities have been adapted over the years to facilitate coal handling. This basin was built in 1874-8 for coal shipment. This view shows a steam collier moored to the west quay of the basin, waiting for a cargo of coal for Northern Ireland. This ship belonged to J and S Kelly of Belfast, who dominated the Belfast coal trade for many years. The basin was originally a gated dock, but the gates were removed many years ago. The basin is still in use, and has been equipped with modern coal-handling equipment. Source: RCAHMS contribution to SCRAN.
