Scope and Content Coaling crane, Ayr Harbour, Ayr (South Ayrshire council area) Ayr has been a coal-exporting port since the 18th century, and its harbour facilities have been adapted over the years to facilitate coal handling. This large electric crane was installed in the 1950s to discharge railway wagons directly into colliers. This view shows a coal wagon on the lifting cradle, ready to be lifted. The man to the left is wielding a hammer to loosen the catches holding the end door of the wagon in place, so that the contents can be tipped into the collier alongside. This crane had a relatively short life, being replaced by conveyor handling of coal transported in hopper wagons, and it has now been scrapped. Source: RCAHMS contribution to SCRAN.
