Scope and Content Coaling crane, Ayr Harbour, Ayr (South Ayrshire council area) Ayr has been a coal-exporting port since the 18th century, and its harbour facilities have been adapted over the years to facilitate coal handling. This large electric crane was installed in the 1950s to discharge railway wagons directly into colliers. This view shows the crane discharging coal from a steel mineral wagon into a small motor collier. The wagon is supported by a cradle which can be tilted to tip the contents out. This crane had a relatively short life, being replaced by conveyor handling of coal transported in hopper wagons, and it has now been scrapped. Source: RCAHMS contribution to SCRAN.
