Scope and Content Railway viaduct, Dalmarnock, Glasgow (Glasgow City council area) This was the western one of a pair of parallel viaducts over the river Clyde, and appears to have been built in about 1858 to carry the Caledonian Railway's London Road Branch, under the supervision of the company's engineer, George Graham. This view shows the viaduct from the south west. The malleable-iron spans were supported on cylindrical cast iron piers, with cast iron cross-bracing. The main spans have bowed trusses, The piers have cracked, and been reinforced with steel straps. This structure seems to have been the first in Scotland to have bowed trusses on cast-iron columns, a form of construction that became popular in the 1860s. The designers of most of them were Band E Blyth, Edinburgh, who may have designed this one. Source: RCAHMS contribution to SCRAN.
