Scope and Content United Co-operative Baking Society's bakery, Adelphi Street, McNeil Street, Ballater Street and Moffat Street, Glasgow Built 1886-1916, this vast bakery supplied bread and other bakery products to the thriving retail co-operative movement in greater Glasgow. The first section was in McNeil Street, but the company expanded to occupy a whole block. This shows the works from the north-west, showing the Adelphi Street frontage, facing Glasgow Green, and part of the Moffat Street frontage. Note the elaborate treatment of the brickwork, and the red sandstone corner towers, surmounted by statues. The Adelphi Street block was completed in 1908 and was, like the rest, designed by Bruce & Hay, architects, who used red and yellow bricks as the main cladding material, with sandstone dressings. The bakery closed c.1970 and was demolished in 1977. Source: RCAHMS contribution to SCRAN.
