Scope and Content Forrest Mill, Selkirk, Scottish Borders This was originally a wool spinning mill, but it was greatly enlarged in 1868 for power-loom weaving. After the construction of Philiphaugh Mill in 1874-6 it was used for washing and dyeing raw wool, and for designing and weaving tweeds. This shows the exterior of the buildings used for washing and dyeing, with the boiler house and its chimney on the right. The wheeled containers were used for moving wool about. The small car on the right was of a type issued to disabled people. An integrated woollen business like George Roberts & Co Ltd, owners of this works, took in raw fleeces, scoured them to remove dirt and grease, then dyed them before the carding process, so that blends of colours could be incorporated in yarn.
