Scope and Content Philiphaugh Mill, Selkirk, Scottish Borders This was a spinning mill founded by George Roberts in 1874 to complement their older Forrest Mill in the town of Selkirk. It was unusual in housing its carding machines and spinning mules in single-storeyed north-lit sheds. This shows the front of the hand-fired Lancashire boiler which supplied steam for heating the mill, and for driving the auxiliary steam engine installed in 1911. This was a typical boiler for a small textile mill. The owners of this mill, George Roberts & Co Ltd, used it to supply yarn to its Forrest Mill. The raw wool was washed and dyed at Forrest Mill, spun here, and returned for weaving to Forrest Mill, where designing also took place. Source: RCAHMS contribution to SCRAN.
