Scope and Content Philiphaugh Mill, Selkirk, Scottish Borders This was a spinning mill founded by George Roberts in 1874 to complement their older Forrest Mill in the town of Selkirk. It was unusual in housing its carding machines and spinning mules in single-storey north-lit sheds. This shows the steam engine installed in 1912 as a standby power unit to two water turbines. The engine was of the twin tandem compound type, and this view shows the cylinders of the right-hand part of the engine. This engine, built by Petrie of Rochdale, latterly operated with the left-hand engine disconnected. It was taken out of service in 1972, and was removed in 1974 to New Lanark, where it has been re-erected in an existing engine house. Source: RCAHMS contribution to SCRAN.
