Scope and Content St Anne's Leather Works, No 78 Tullis Street, Glasgow This factory was founded in 1869 by John Tullis & Son to make leather belts for driving machinery. The frontage buildings surviving in the 1960s were built in 1899-1900, and were fitted with louvres on the top two floors for drying hides. This shows the 1899-1900 blocks in course of demolition, from the rear. The eastern building, on the left, has already gone. As can be seen, the timber floors were supported on steel beams and cast iron columns. The firm of John Tullis & Son developed a world reputation as makers of machine driving belts. Apart from leather, they also made balata belts of a natural polymer rather like rubber. Individual electric motor drives killed the demand for driving belts. Source: RCAHMS contribution to SCRAN.
