Scope and Content Bonawe Ironworks, Taynuilt, Argyll & Bute Founded by the proprietors of the Newland Furnace in Furness, this charcoal-fuelled iron-smelting works was the most successful of a number of such works established in the western Highlands of Scotland in the mid-18th century. This shows the site of the waterwheel which drove the blowing engine. The drive passed through the upper hole in the wall on the right. The water came from the River Awe along a long lade. This was the last charcoal iron works to operate in Scotland, closing in the mid-1870s. The works was sited to use a reliable source of water power and enough woodland to supply charcoal to the works. The ore was imported from Lancashire. Source: RCAHMS contribution to SCRAN.
